Checking

How we will solve your problems:

This is a similar failure to crocodiling /alligatoring but it is less severe and is characterized by long, fairly evenly spaced cracks in the paint film having shallow relief or depth. Occasionally checking may become severe in some areas and a deeper crack or split in the paint will occur.

POSSIBLE CAUSES:
• Natural ageing of several layers of older oil based paint. As the material having been painted shrinks and expands over time, the paint has to move and as it loses it elasticity, it checks.

SOLUTION:
• The solution is the same as for crocodiling/alligatoring. Old paint should be completely removed by scraping and sanding the surface; a heat gun can be used to speed work on large surfaces, but take care to avoid igniting paint or substrates. The surface should be primed with high quality water-based or solvent-based primer, and then painted with two coats of a top quality exterior water-based paint.
